How it works
How to calculate your bi-weekly pay
A bi-weekly schedule pays you every two weeks — 26 paychecks a year, since 52 weeks divided by two is 26. To get your gross bi-weekly pay, divide your annual salary by 26. To get your net bi-weekly paycheck, first remove federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare, then divide what's left by 26.
| Annual salary | Gross bi-weekly | Est. net bi-weekly* |
|---|---|---|
| $40,000 | $1,538 | ~$1,320 |
| $60,000 | $2,308 | ~$1,900 |
| $80,000 | $3,077 | ~$2,460 |
| $100,000 | $3,846 | ~$3,040 |

Bi-weekly vs. semi-monthly
It's easy to confuse the two. Bi-weekly means every two weeks (26 checks); semi-monthly means twice a month (24 checks). Bi-weekly paychecks are a little smaller, but twice a year a month contains three paychecks — a useful budgeting quirk many workers plan around.

Questions
Bi-weekly pay FAQ
How do I calculate my bi-weekly pay?
Divide your gross annual salary by 26, because a bi-weekly schedule pays you every two weeks for a total of 26 paychecks a year. For take-home pay, subtract federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare first, then divide the net result by 26.
How many bi-weekly paychecks are there in a year?
There are 26 bi-weekly pay periods in a year (52 weeks ÷ 2). Twice a year you receive three paychecks in a single month, which is why bi-weekly differs from semi-monthly pay (24 checks).
What is the bi-weekly take-home on a $60,000 salary?
On a $60,000 salary with no state tax, take-home pay is roughly $49,000–$50,000 a year, which is about $1,890–$1,920 per bi-weekly paycheck after federal tax and FICA. State income tax, where it applies, lowers this further.
Is bi-weekly the same as semi-monthly pay?
No. Bi-weekly pays every two weeks for 26 checks a year; semi-monthly pays twice a month for 24 checks a year. Bi-weekly checks are slightly smaller but more frequent, and two months a year contain three bi-weekly paychecks.
