The formula

How to convert a salary into an hourly wage

🧮
Hourly rate = annual salary ÷ (hours per week × weeks per year). For full-time work that's salary ÷ 2,080.

The simplicity hides an important truth: your real hourly rate depends entirely on how many hours you actually work. The same $80,000 salary is worth $38.46 an hour at a tidy 40-hour week — but drops to $30.77 an hour if you routinely put in 50-hour weeks with no overtime pay.

Common salaries as hourly rates

Annual salaryHourly (40h)Hourly (45h)Hourly (50h)
$40,000$19.23$17.09$15.38
$50,000$24.04$21.37$19.23
$60,000$28.85$25.64$23.08
$75,000$36.06$32.05$28.85
$100,000$48.08$42.74$38.46
$120,000$57.69$51.28$46.15

Why this number matters more than you think

Knowing your hourly rate reframes everyday decisions. A two-hour task you could outsource for $40 is a bargain if your time is worth $48 an hour. It also exposes the true cost of "free" overtime: every uncompensated hour quietly lowers the rate you negotiated for.

Comparing a salary offer against an hourly job

When weighing a salaried offer against an hourly role, convert both to the same unit and account for benefits. A salaried job at $30/hour-equivalent with health insurance, paid leave and a 401(k) match can easily out-value an hourly job paying $34/hour with none of those. Questions

Salary to hourly FAQ

How do you convert a salary to an hourly rate?

Divide your annual salary by the number of hours you work in a year. For a standard full-time schedule that is your salary divided by 2,080 (40 hours × 52 weeks). For example, a $60,000 salary equals about $28.85 per hour.

What is a $50,000 salary per hour?

A $50,000 annual salary at 40 hours a week for 52 weeks equals about $24.04 per hour before taxes. If you regularly work more than 40 hours without extra pay, your effective hourly rate is lower.

Why is my real hourly rate lower than the simple math?

Salaried workers who put in more than 40 hours a week earn no extra pay for those hours, so the real rate per hour worked falls. A $70,000 salary is $33.65/hour at 40 hours, but only about $29.91/hour at 45 hours a week.

Does converting salary to hourly change my taxes?

No. Taxes are based on your total annual earnings, not on whether you are paid hourly or salaried. The conversion is purely a way to compare offers or understand the value of your time.
