How Montana taxes your paycheck in 2026
Montana simplified to a two-rate income tax and, under House Bill 337, cut the top rate from 5.9% to 5.65% for 2026. The Montana Department of Revenue uses the federal standard deduction as its starting point, applying 4.7% to a wide lower band and 5.65% above roughly $47,500 single / $95,000 married.
| Rate | Taxable income |
|---|---|
| 4.7% | $0 – $47,500 |
| 5.65% | Over $47,500 |
Marginal rates — only income within each band is taxed at that rate. 2026 figures, before the state standard deduction/exemption.
A wider low band plus no sales tax
The 2025 reform significantly widened the 4.7% band, so more income is taxed at the lower rate. Montana also has no general sales tax, which partly offsets the income tax and keeps everyday purchases cheaper than in most states.
