Annual to monthly

How to convert your salary to monthly income

The simple part is gross: divide your annual salary by 12. The number that matters for a budget, though, is your net monthly take-home — gross monthly minus your share of federal tax, Social Security and Medicare. This calculator gives you both, because landlords and lenders often want gross monthly income while your budget runs on net.

Worked example: $72,000 salary

$72,000 ÷ 12 = $6,000 gross per month. After federal tax, Social Security and Medicare, a single filer keeps roughly $59,200 a year — about $4,930 net per month. The gap between $6,000 and $4,930 is exactly what taxes take each month.

Annual salaryGross monthlyNet monthly*
$48,000$4,000~$3,420
$72,000$6,000~$4,930
$96,000$8,000~$6,375
$120,000$10,000~$7,800

*Single filer, standard deduction, 2026 federal brackets and FICA, no state tax.

💡
Renting? Many landlords require gross monthly income of about 3× the rent. On $72,000 ($6,000 gross/month), that supports rent up to roughly $2,000 — but budget against your net $4,930, not the gross.

Questions

Salary to monthly income FAQ

How do I convert my annual salary to monthly income?

Divide your annual salary by 12 for gross monthly income. For net monthly take-home, subtract federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare from your annual salary first, then divide by 12. A $72,000 salary is $6,000 gross or about $4,930 net per month.

What is the monthly income on a $72,000 salary?

Gross monthly income is $6,000 ($72,000 ÷ 12). After federal tax and FICA, a single filer takes home roughly $4,930 per month with no state tax. State income tax, where it applies, lowers the net figure.

Should I use gross or net monthly income for a budget?

Use net monthly income for budgeting, because that is the cash you can actually spend. Landlords and lenders, however, usually ask for gross monthly income to assess affordability, so it helps to know both numbers.

Does monthly income include state tax?

This calculator shows a federal estimate without state tax. To include your state income tax in the monthly figure, use the take-home pay by state calculator and divide the net result by 12.
